Why a bought caddy rocks
Its footprint was drawn for an average rim, and yours isn't average. Set it down and it bridges two high points with a gap under the third, so it tips whenever you lean on it.
Why it holds water
The drainage gaps went where the mold was convenient, which is rarely where your drain is. Water finds the low corner, sits there, and the sponge above it never dries.
